Understand the Space
First and foremost, you must identify if your window space has a recess and make the decision as to whether your blind will fit inside or outside of this space. It seems like a simple step, but it can be difficult to tell where the blind should sit if you’re not used to measuring. If there is a recess, ensure there’s nothing within the space that would prevent the blind from being fully extended, like handles, phone sockets or wall fittings.
Measuring Inner Recess
When measuring for width, we always recommend using a metal tape measure for accuracy as these are more reliable. Start by measuring the width at three different points to get an average, as the measurements may not be consistent along the entire recess. Measure at either end and in the middle and use the smallest measurement as your width guide. For venetian, roman and roller blinds, remember to reduce the width by 1cm to allow for smooth extension.
To measure for blind length, take the same approach and use a metal tape measure from the top of the recess to the windowsill at three points and note the narrowest point. For vertical blinds, we recommend you reduce the length by 1cm to prevent the fabric from catching on the sill.
Measuring Windows Without A Recess
For spaces without a recess, add an extra 10cm to the width for full coverage. Again, use a metal tape measure for accuracy and measure across the window width, adding an extra 10cm (or 4″) to the total width to allow a 5cm (or 2″) overlap either side of the window to block out light effectively. For roller blinds add a further 5cm (or 2″) to the width to allow room for the operating mechanism.
